A brilliant and hugely topical psychological suspense novel about the ultimate trespass. The phrase "feminine mystique" was coined by Friedan to describe the assumptions that women would be fulfilled from their housework, marriage, sexual lives, and children. She originally intended to create an article on the topic, not a book, but no magazine would publish the work. In 1957, Friedan was asked to conduct a survey of her former Smith College classmates for their 15th anniversary reunion the results, in which she found that many of them were unhappy with their lives as housewives, prompted her to begin research for The Feminine Mystique, conducting interviews with other suburban housewives, as well as researching psychology, media, and advertising. Friedan used the book to challenge the widely shared belief that "fulfillment as a woman had only one definition for American women after 1949-the housewife-mother." Norton on February 19, 1963, The Feminine Mystique became a bestseller, initially selling over a million copies. The Feminine Mystique is a book by Betty Friedan, widely credited with sparking second-wave feminism in the United States. And also (although there are zombies) it was not very much scary or gross. The other reasons are: saucy best friend, bad boy crush, a lot of action and adventure.Īnother big plus for this book: there is no cliffhanger in the end. She is a good narrator and it's one of the reasons this book was such a quick read. Oh and did I mention that she started seeing zombies that no one else can? The story is told in a first-person point of view from her perspective. :)Īlice is a young girl with a lot on her plate: tragic loss of her family, moving to live with her grand-parents, changing school. It was an intense, entertaining and quick read. Annoyed, I renamed the book 'Alice in Melodrama-land' and started planning what to read next - because I knew that I could not read 400 pages of teenager moaning and complaining and that I will give up soon.īut this book managed to surprise me again because by 15% I was hooked. It was obvious that tittle is misleading and that this will not be a retelling of 'Alice in Wonderland'. After reading about 10% of this book I was very disappointed. After playing a secondary role in the previous books, Bank’s makes them the focus, exploring their varied natures and personalities. What’s neat though is that the Minds are the stars of this novel. It takes far too much time for the story to heat-up, the early part of Excession weighed down by tangents, too many characters and conversations between the Minds that are entertaining but repetitive. It all sounds exhilarating, but those plot points I’ve just mentioned happen well into the novel. The Affront is also bound for the anomaly, stealing a moth-balled fleet of Culture warships so they can stake their claim. The ship that Dajeil calls home, the Sleeper Service, is heading toward the Excession (the MacGuffin in space). The third narrative is a tale of love gone sour between the perpetually pregnant Dajeil and the promiscuous Genar-Hofoen. The second involves a war between the Culture and the overly aggressive Affront. The first, and most fascinating, is the appearance of a spatial anomaly that the Culture recognises as exhibiting technology in advance of their own. Excession features three interweaving storylines. Their journey with a band of unlikely allies would see Dior and Gabriel forge an unbreakable bond, and set the broken paragon on a road to redemption. Most importantly, Gabriel will tell the story of the Grail-the legendary cup prophesied to bring an end to the eternal night, whose location is known to a single person: A smart-mouthed teenage urchin named Dior. The Last Van Helsing) as the vampire Gladiolus Hadilus Tradius Thrip. His tale spans years, from his youth in the monastery of San Michon, to the forbidden love that spelled his undoing, and the betrayal that saw his order annihilated. Paul James Mackenzie Crook (born 29 September 1971) is an English actor, comedian. Imprisoned for the murder of the vampiric king, Gabriel is charged with telling the story of his life. Gabriel de León is the last of the Silversaints, a holy order dedicated to defending realm and church, now utterly destroyed. Once, humanity fought bravely against the coldblood legions, but now, we exist only in a few scattered settlements-tiny sparks of light in a growing sea of darkness. Twenty-seven years have passed since the last sunrise, and for almost three decades, the creatures of the night have walked the day without fear. Ultimately, he focused his editorial talents on Seconds : a magazine of his own featuring 51 issues from 1986 to 2000 which prepared him to write three books on rock: American Hardcore about the early -80’s hardcore punk scene, which has since been adapted into a documentary film written and directed by Blush American Hair Metal - no explanation necessary and finally New York Rock.īlush’s newest project is a comprehensive guide of 21st century New York’s burgeoning cultures brought together by rock! His presentation began with the secret of New York’s successful scene (attitude, of course!) and a brief description of the book’s two poles. His journalistic contributions span from most magazines alternative music fans can think of: Kerrang!, Rap Express, Spin and Paper. For those unfamiliar with Blush, he is an automatic authority on rock history, of New York and otherwise. Steven Blush, best known for his book American Hardcore: A Tribal History, spoke at Green Apple Books in San Francisco to discuss his newest book New York Rock: From the Rise of The Velvet Underground to the Fall of CBGB. Incredibly, San Francisco has given me tremendous opportunities to connect with the music scene we are so devoted to, and on Saturday I was introduced to a punk legend as well as a prolific rock chronicler.
